Salman Khan must apologise: BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday demanded an apology from Bollywood actor Salman Khan for his "unwarranted comments" on the 26/11 attacks to a Pakistani TV channel where he said that the Pakistani government is not to be blamed for it and the terror attack gained attention "only because the elite were targeted".

"We strongly condemn Salman Khan's unwarranted and irresponsible comments and that too to a Pakistani channel. How can he say only the elite were targeted? Is he not aware of the common people killed at the railway station and also the security forces? Moreover he has no right to give the ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) and the Pakistani government a clean chit... He should immediately apologise," BJP spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain told IANS.

Salman Khan in an interview to Pakistan's Express TV said the Pakistani government is not to be blamed and that it was a security failure on India's part.

"Salman's comment at this point when all the evidence is pointing a finger at the ISI and Pakistan, is totally uncalled for. This will weaken India's case and strengthen Pakistan's. He is an Indian celebrity and he has disappointed many Indian fans. If there was POTA today he would be behind bars," Hussain said.

"Salman should concentrate on films and not make such coments," Hussain added.

The Nov 26-29, 2008 attack left 166 people dead as 10 terrorists who sailed in from Karachi let loose coordinated shooting and bombing attacks largely across south Mumbai.

Eight of the attacks occurred in south Mumbai at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, the Oberoi Trident, the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower, Leopold Cafe, Cama Hospital, the Orthodox Jewish-owned Nariman House, the Metro Cinema and a lane behind the Times of India building and St. Xavier's College. There was also an explosion at Mazagaon, in Mumbai's port area, and in a taxi at Vile Parle.

Islam controversies cast shadow over 9/11 events

A day of mourning for nearly 3,000 Sept 11 victims began with moments of silence and tears near ground zero, as observers braced for protests over a mosque planned blocks away on what is usually an anniversary free of politics.

Chants of thousands of sign-waving protesters both for and against the Islamic center were expected after an annual observance normally known for a sad litany of families reading names of loved ones lost in the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Speaking at "hallowed ground" at the Pentagon, President Barack Obama alluded to the controversy over the mosque - and a Florida pastor's threat, later rescinded, to burn copies of the Muslim holy book. Obama made it clear that the US is not at war with Islam and called the al-Qaida attackers as "a sorry band of men" who perverted religion.

"We will not give in to their hatred," Obama said. "As Americans, we will not or ever be at war with Islam."

Family members gathering at observances in New York and Pennsylvania brought flowers, pictures of loved ones and American flags, but no signs of opposition or support for the mosque. Reading victims' names at ground zero in New York, they urged a restrained tone.

"Let today never, ever be a national holiday. Let it not be a celebration," said Karen Carroll, who lost her brother, firefighter Thomas Kuveikis. "It's a day to be somber; it's a day to reflect on all those thousands of people that died for us in the United States."

Standing before microphones, stifling sobs, some family members who read names sought to emphasize sentiments on all sides of the mosque argument.

Some - including Nadine DeGrange, whose uncle, Frank Wisniewski, 54, was killed - stressed that ground zero is hallowed.

"I come here every year because this is the only burial ground I know. And I pray to God it remains sacred," she said.

Others sought to embrace unity and a spirit of reaching out, which is what the developers of the Islamic center have said is their goal.

"May we share your courage as we build bridges with other people to prevent this from happening again and to preserve human dignity for all," said Robert Ferris, saluting the dozens of building workers who joined families in reading names.

Ferris lost his father, who worked at Aon Corp. Bagpipes and drums played to open the ceremony, followed by brief comments by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

"Once again we meet to commemorate the day we have come to call 9/11. We have returned to this sacred site to join our hearts together, the names of those we loved and lost," Bloomberg said. "No other public tragedy has cut our city so deeply. No other place is as filled with our compassion, our love and our solidarity."

Moments of silence were held to mark the times the hijacked jetliners hit the north and south towers of the World Trade Center, as well as the times the towers collapsed. President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama attended separate services at the Pentagon in Washington and a rural field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The mosque debate pits advocates of religious freedom against critics who say putting an Islamic center so close to ground zero disrespects the dead. While the rallies planned in New York embroiled victims' family members in a feud over whether to play politics, a threat to burn copies of the Quran was apparently called off.

Terry Jones, the Florida pastor who made the threat, flew to New York on Friday night and appeared Saturday on NBC's "Today" show. He said his church would not burn the Quran, a plan that inflamed much of the Muslim world and drew a stern rebuke from Obama.

"We feel that God is telling us to stop," he told NBC. Pressed on whether his church would ever burn the Islamic holy book, he said: "Not today, not ever. We're not going to go back and do it. It is totally canceled."

He said that he flew to New York in the hopes of meeting with leaders of the Islamic center but that no such meeting was scheduled.

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, leader of the planned mosque, said Friday that he was "prepared to consider meeting with anyone who is seriously committed to pursuing peace" but had no meeting planned with Jones.

Lending credence to Jones' comments, a "Burn a Koran Day" banner outside his Gainesville, Florida, church was taken down.

There was no immediate reaction to Jones' comments in Afghanistan, where on Saturday shops and police checkpoints had been set afire as thousands of people protested the planned burning and chanted "Death to America" in Logar province. At least 11 people were injured Friday in similar protests in Badakhshan province.

Canada wants more talented Indians: Minister

India has emerged as one of the top source countries of immigration to Canada and Ottawa is looking forward to more number of talented Indians who can contribute to its development.

"In 2009, India was the top source country of immigration to Canada and obviously Punjab was leading on this front," Canadian Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney told reporters here on Thursday evening.

"Over 32,000 permanent resident visas were issued to Indian nationals last year, an increase of 13 percent over 2008 and nearly 53 percent more than the three-year average from 1997 to 1999," he said.

Kenney said that Canada has put no tab on the new immigrants coming to their country, as was done by other developed countries.

"Diplomatic relations with India are particularly very important and they are growing stronger. Canada is supporting the Indian nuclear industry that will help address its future energy needs. But I believe that most important thing is human connectivity and it is also deepening further every year," said Kenney.

"We are maintaining a unique immigration programme as compared to other developed countries like the US, Britain and Australia. All of them have put a cut on the number of new immigrants but we have not done this," he stated.

Talking about the study visas granted to Indian students, Kenney said: "Study visas have seen a steep rise. By the end of this year, it is estimated that the number of study visas would have tripled over 2008 levels."

"To help Indian students settle in Canada after completing their studies, we have launched Canadian Experience Class (CEC) scheme. Last year, nearly 3,500 students availed this scheme and this year we are expecting around 500 Indian students to go for it," he said.

Kenney said that Canada has been immensely benefited from the talent and hard work of Indians and around one million Canadians can trace their ancestry to India. "We are committed to grant more visas to Indians, who are interested to visit, study and to immigrate to Canada," he said.

To assist residents of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, a Canadian consulate opened in Chandigarh in 2004. "In 2009, Chandigarh-based consulate had issued over double the number of visitor visas than in 2004. In 2004, it issued 3,300 visas whereas this number rose to 10,040 in 2009," said Kenney.

100 fastest growing small companies that hold potential to make it big

Success, be it small or big, needs to be celebrated. In keeping with this belief, ET Intelligence Group unveils a list of India Inc’s 100 Fastest Growing Small Companies annually. It is the fastest-growing small companies of today that hold the promise to emerge as tomorrow’s giants.

But this comes with a caveat. It is difficult to say, for sure, which of these smaller speedsters of India Inc would make it to the Grand Prix in the future. As they say, past performance is no guarantee of excellence in the future. But what we can state from historical trends is the kind of companies which have the potential to make it big.

Given their consistent past performance, the companies in the latest list of ETIG’s 100 Fastest Growing Small Companies hold the potential to emerge as likely winners. Investors should cherry-pick stocks from the list based on further research or build a portfolio based on our selection to stay ahead of the markets.

The showstoppers on bourses

A robust financial performance goes a long way in winning investor confidence. To put it in perspective, 77 companies that featured in our 2009 list of 100 Fastest Growing Small Companies outperformed the benchmark indices in the year gone by.

Moreover, the stock prices of 27 companies more than doubled during the period. A portfolio, which includes the top 10 companies from the list, would have enriched an investor by 59%, as against a market gain of 21%. A portfolio of top 25 companies would have earned 61%. And a portfolio with equal weightage of all these 100 companies would be valued higher today by 73%. Indeed an impressive feat.

The new heroes

Zydus Wellness leads the ETIG’s 2010 list of 100 Fastest Growing Small Companies. It zoomed to the top from fourth position last year. The scrip has benefited immensely due to the merger of Cadila Healthcare’s consumer healthcare business and continues to remain debt-free and cash-rich.

The recently listed Technofab Engineering occupies the second spot, thanks to its impressive profit growth over the last three years. But it is Hawkins Cookers, which stole the show in the top five. It made it to the top three after figuring down in the list at the 19th position last year. A superior profit growth in FY10 helped the company cruise past the likes of Man Infraconstruction, Vinati Organics and VST Tillers Tractors. Vinati Organics shot up from last year’s 14th rank to 8th this year and VST Tillers from 27th to 12th position.

A few seem to have lost their ground compared to last year. Tata Sponge Iron, which stood tall at the third position in 2009 list, has slipped to 20th this year. Similarly, Praj Industries slipped considerably moving down to 83 in the list after being ranked 10th last year. Sulzer India, the topper from last year, recently got delisted and hence couldn’t make it to the list this year.

Among other firms, Bliss GVS Pharma made an impressive entry to the list occupying the fourth position. Man Infra — another newly listed company — entered the list directly at the fifth spot. Plastic goods manufacturer, Mayur Uniquoters, which had failed to make it to last year’s list due to weak interest coverage ratio in the past, has made it this year. The company ranks seventh in this year’s list.

Do refer to the future editions of ET Investor’s Guide to know more about some of the companies in the latest listing.

How we did it?

For compiling the list of companies, we included companies with net sales below Rs 1,000 crore during FY10. With a view to exclude small companies with possibly dubious credentials, we eliminated from the list companies with a market capitalisation of less than Rs 50 crore.

To make sure that the list was populated only with companies showing healthy financials, we added further criteria, such as return on capital employed (RoCE), debt-equity ratio (DER) and interest coverage ratio (ICR), cash flows from operations and dividends paid.

India Inc’s Small Speedsters

As a result, the final list comprised companies, which consistently maintained their RoCE over 15% during the past three years, DER below 1.5 in the past three years and an ICR above 5. Companies which had missing or skipped dividends more than once during the last three years or companies with more than one year of negative operating cashflows, too, were weeded out. This left us with nearly 140 companies with healthy fina ncials.
Since we were trying to identify the fastest growing companies, we calculated weighted average growth rates of sales and profits for all these companies, assigning the highest weightage to growth in FY10. This rewarded their latest performance over growth in the past. Finally, the three-year sales and profit growth and RoCE were assigned 30:30:40 weightage to decide the final rankings.

We also decided not to select such companies that have strained their balance sheets for the sake of pursuing high growth. Our list comprises healthy cash generating companies, paying regular dividends with under-leveraged balance sheets. These companies are also earning substantially higher on the capital they have invested in their businesses than their cost of funds.

This ensures that they will continue to have sufficient surplus to reinvest in the business after paying their creditors and equity shareholders. Less of debt and higher interest coverage ensure their sustainability even in difficult times.

These companies have performed consistently to deserve a ranking in the list. But remember, the entry to our list of 100 Fastest Growing Small Companies alone is not an investment trigger. It serves more as an entry point to begin your investment research.

Sensex hits 32-month high; banks gain

Indian shares rose the most in 3.6 months and scaled new 32-month high on Monday, as investors cheered robust July factory output, with strong world markets also boosting sentiment. Financials topped the gainers with top lender State Bank of India and HDFC Bank hitting an all-time high in expectations demand for loans would rise on the back of strong economic growth in Asia's third-largest economy. Data released last Friday showed July industrial output accelerated 13.8 percent on surging capital goods production, strengthening the case for monetary tightening by the central bank to tame near double-digit inflation.

The markets were closed for a local holiday on Friday. The 30-share BSE index rose for the fifth straight session and climbed 2.17 percent or 408.67 points to 19,208.33, with 26 of its components advancing. It rose to as much as 19,243.44 points, its highest since January 2008.

"We are bullish on the market from a long-term perspective. But in the near term, the current levels have already priced in FY11 valuations," said Dipen Shah, senior vice-president of research for private client group at Kotak Securities.

"Liquidity is driving the market higher, but we need to have clarity on FY12 earnings." Shah expects Sensex to rise to 19,500 points at end-December and to 23,000 points by end-June 2011. Foreign funds have pumped in $13.5 billion into Indian equities so far in 2010, driving the benchmark index nearly 10 percent higher, in addition to record inflows of $17.5 billion, which led to an 81 percent rally in 2009.

In the year so far, Indian equities were the second-most preferred bet in the region after Japanese shares, which received foreign fund flow to the tune of $20.2 billion, data from Nomura showed. [ID:nSP71245] Top lender State Bank of India closed 5.5 percent higher, fter rising as much as 6.5 percent earlier to an all-time high of 3,175 rupees. HDFC Bank rose as high as 2,294 rupees and closed 1.9 percent higher at 2,282.15 rupees, while ICICI Bank scaled a 31-month-high to end 4.4 percent higher.

"Credit growth is expected to pick up. Market participants believe there may not be a steep (interest rate) hike (at the (central bank policy review on Thursday)," said Shah. Global regulators agreed on a set of radical new capital rules for banks on Sunday that could free up stronger lenders to release surplus cash while forcing some laggards to raise funds.

Energy giant Reliance Industries, which has the highest weight on the main index, climbed 3.6 percent, catching up with the rally in the broader market after recent underperformance. The stock is still down nearly 9 percent year to date. Export-oriented software companies gained on expectations of better economic outlook in the United States, their key market. Top outsourcer Tata Consultancy Services climbed 0.9 percent, while rival Infosys Technologies firmed 1.5 percent. Wipro, the No. 3 outsourcer, bucked the trend and dropped 1.3 percent.

Mukesh Ambani to be richest man in world in 2014: Forbes

With a net worth of USD 62 billion, Indian business tycoon Mukesh Ambani would be he richest man on earth in 2014, according to a forecast issued by the prestigious Forbes magazine.

"One of the predictions is that Reliance Industries' chief Ambani, who currently has a net worth of 29 billion dollars, pips the world's richest man Mexican businessman Carlos Slim to top Forbes' rich list in 2014," it said.

Ambani's net worth swells to USD 62 billion while Slim is "hit hard by Mexican political, financial chaos," according to the prediction by Forbes.

53-year-old Ambani currently ranks fourth on Forbes' list of the world's billionaires.

Forbes has listed a number of events that could happen over the next 10 years in the field of politics, energy, medicine, finance, society and technology. The publication asked its staff and contributors to forecast some of the "noteworthy events" till 2020.

"A vision of the coming decade sketched from real data, projections and facts whenever possible -- though we've injected a dose of rigorous science fiction to fill the gaps," Forbes said about its special 2020 report called 'What Happens Next -- Our Look Ahead'.

Another forecast in the field of finance and economics is of fraudster Bernard Madoff's death in his prison cell in 2011. The convicted Ponzi-scheme perpetrator is found hanging in his cell and "prison officials will not rule out foul play," according to the Forbes forecast.

"Futurism favours the bold. Look more than 30 years ahead... and critics will forgive your inaccuracies. We've attempted a thought experiment with far tougher standards: predicting the future that's just around the corner," Forbes said.

In 2012, social networking site Facebook debuts on NASDAQ. Its IPOs value USD 40 billion and founder Mark Zuckerberg becomes the first 20-something who is worth USD 10 billion-plus.

Then by 2020, Wal-mart employs five million people worldwide and its sales pass the one trillion dollar mark. The company "cites successful India and Brazil expansions" for the landmark.

In 2017, Harvard endowment doubles in seven years to USD 50 billion. It offers free tuition to lure top students from China.

The US job scene finally improves in 2018 as unemployment drops below seven per cent and worst of quadruple-dip recession is likely over, Forbes predicts.
